Federal Grand Jury Indicts Former National Security Advisor

He pleaded not guilty to mishandling sensitive documents.

A federal grand jury indicted former National Security Advisor John Bolton on Thursday on 18 felony counts surrounding the mishandling, hoarding, and sharing of classified national security documents. He is alleged to have shared sensitive information through his personal email after being fired from his position by President Donald Trump in 2019.

In August, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the former government official’s home in Maryland and office in Washington, D.C., and seized documents marked “classified,“ “confidential,“ or “secret.“ The Justice Department listed items such as “printed daily activities,” and “two iPhones, four computers and hard drives, and two USB drives” in its legal filing.

After turning himself in to federal authorities, Mr. Bolton pleaded not guilty to all charges on Friday.

Reportedly, when Bolton served as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control under President George W. Bush, he allegedly pressured intelligence analysts to embellish evidence of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Iraq to support the U.S. invasion.
