Migrants Amass at Border, Anticipating Title 42 Expiration

A new rule could block some asylum seekers.

Hundreds of migrants have gathered at the U.S.-Mexico border, anticipating the expiration of Title 42 and the reintroduction of America’s formal asylum process. The majority are choosing to wait for legal asylum applications to open, but many are taking advantage of the crowds to cross the border illegally. Some are purchasing pool floats in Mexico to cross the Rio Grande, some are just lining up to turn themselves in to U.S. border agents, hoping that detainment will at least ensure they get into the country.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has pulled hundreds of personnel to the Southern Border to prepare for the expiration of immigration policy Title 42 on Thursday. The department expects this to result in even more arrivals at the border.

A new rule, finalized by the Justice Department and Homeland Security, would allow the U.S. to reject asylum claims from many illegal immigrants who have left their home countries and crossed through Mexico to reach the United States. The federal government contends that true asylum seekers could have settled in other countries they transited.

President Biden said his administration is seeking an orderly change and are working accordingly. “But it remains to be seen,” he said. “It’s going to be chaotic for a while.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Mayorkas as he oversees the implementation of the new asylum rule.
  • For Border Patrol agents and other personnel stationed by DHS to prevent illegal entry into the U.S.
  • For discernment for the president and his advisers as they shift into a different approach to asylum.
