The president says, “It was seized for a very good reason.”
President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Coast Guard, assisted by the U.S. Navy, had seized a Venezuelan crude oil tanker. The United States has sanctioned Venezuela’s oil industry for years, with a brief lessening in 2024 and 2025 until President Trump revoked a license that allowed Chevron to purchase oil from Caracas.
“We’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela. Large tanker, very large. Largest one ever seized action. And, other things are happening. So you’ll be seeing that later. And you’ll be talking about that later with some other people,” President Trump said. “It was seized for a very good reason.”
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Homeland Security Investigations were also involved in seizing the tanker that was being “used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.”
She added that the tanker “has been sanctioned by the United States due to its involvement in an illicit oil shipping network supporting foreign terrorist organizations.”
The tanker was also reportedly attempting to conceal its location by broadcasting false data from its transponder.
