House Speaker Calls Representatives Back to Congress for Funding Vote

The Senate measure makes adjustments to the continuing resolution that the House passed in September.

House Speaker Mike Johnson called members back to Congress after the Senate passed legislation to temporarily fund the federal government. The Senate met the filibuster threshold and approved the legislation on Monday evening. The upper chamber agreed that a vote will be held in December on the extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Speaker Johnson said, “There’ll be long days and long nights here for the foreseeable future to make up for all this lost time that was imposed upon us.” He has kept the House in recess for the duration of the shutdown.

The shutdown, which marked its 41st day Monday, was the longest in U.S. history. The second-longest occurred during President Trump’s first term, in 2018-2019.

“I said that we will be voting on the final package in the very near future, and I’m hoping that will be hours and not days,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune. “I’m grateful that the end is in sight, but I would encourage every member of this body… pro-bill or anti-bill, not to stand in the way of being able to deliver the coming relief quickly,” he added.

Senator Thune said the American people “have suffered for long enough.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Thune as they preside over their respective chambers of Congress.
  • For discernment for members of the House as they assess the updated continuing resolution and prepare to vote on it.
  • For federal officials, agents, officers, and air traffic controllers who have worked without pay through the shutdown.
