DHS Allocates Additional $155 Million for NC Helene Recovery

Funds will support more than 130 projects as communities rebuild from record damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved $155 million in new federal aid for western North Carolina to assist recovery from Tropical Storm Helene. The region experienced catastrophic flooding and landslides in late September 2024. The storm, which was the costliest and deadliest in the state’s history, resulted in at least 105 deaths and over $60 billion in damage across North Carolina.

“President Trump and Secretary Noem are committed to streamlining aid and supporting North Carolina’s recovery from Tropical Storm Helene and other disasters,” said a DHS spokesperson. “These millions of dollars in federal assistance will help communities repair critical infrastructure, restore essential services and continue rebuilding stronger for the future.”

Since January 2025, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $632 million in reimbursements for public recovery efforts, including road, bridge, and utility repairs. Major grants include $54 million for the state’s Department of Transportation (DOT) and $40 million for local electric utilities.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For federal, state, and local officials as they continue the recovery work from last year’s massive storm.
  • For Secretary Noem and Assistant Secretary MacLaughlin as they seek to support states recovering from natural disasters.
  • For the residents in North Carolina and surrounding states who are still working their way out of the devastation.
