Xavier Becerra Confirmed as HHS Secretary

Pro-life groups express concerns.

During his confirmation hearing, Xavier Becerra told Congress he was “humbled by the task” of responsibility for heading HHS, but he was “ready for it” despite not having any experience in healthcare. “I understand the enormous challenges before us and our solemn responsibility to be faithful stewards of an agency that touches almost every aspect of our lives,” he said.

Pro-life advocacy groups responded with statements expressing disappointment and concern over the confirmation of the prior attorney general of California.

“Becerra’s fanatical support of abortion resulted in the state-sponsored persecution of female-founded organizations like the Little Sisters of the Poor and pregnancy centers,” said the president of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, a network of pro-life pregnancy care centers that successfully fought Becerra in court over a California law to force their clinics to provide abortions.

During confirmation hearings, Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma pressed the secretary about whether he would enforce the protections for religious objections already in law. “At the end of the day… I have to follow the law,” Becerra said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Becerra as he begins his tenure as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
  • For the new secretary as he faces migrant health care challenges at hte southern border.
  • For God to open the understanding of the secretary’s heart toward the unborn.
