While the Children Are at Home

1 John 3:18 – Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Oh, yes, indeed, parents across America are very aware that schools are closed, playgrounds are limited, and, as they would tell you, “there’s nothing to do!” Schools and other groups have provided websites filled with ideas on how to keep your children’s education moving forward, and others have cute activity ideas. You may be getting bored with one another because you aren’t used to the enforced 24/ 7 company.

It’s time to think as God does. Schooling your children yourselves gives a blessed opportunity to instill values in them—values they might well not be getting in schools that are preoccupied with social engineering.

Commentators on Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go,” say this is an active commitment to a particular course of action.  The future of every child is filled with possibility, and it is the duty of parents to direct a child’s path toward loving, honoring and obeying God.  Utilize praise and worship music…it can stick to them better than recited words.

During these times when families are isolated together, follow the admonitions of Deuteronomy 6:6-7,  “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”  Sounds like 24/7, and it is. But catch that your first responsibility is to hold God’s Word in your own heart. You cannot give away what you don’t possess.

Pray With Us

Heavenly Father, give me patience, understanding, and love in action toward my children. Let them see me spending time in Your Holy Word and praying. Let my life during these times be an example to them.  Remind me of Your wisdom, and Your promise that if I should lack it, I can ask and You are faithful to provide. Teach me to listen to that still small voice inside that comes from You. I long to guide my children in the way they should go. Let my life prove to them Your greatness, worth, sufficiency and saving power. We will praise You together, O God.

Amen.
