The Minnesota U.S. attorney urged parents to heed warnings from federal law enforcement about the radicalization of youth.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the arrest of an 18-year-old man in Minnesota who pledged allegiance to ISIS and plotted an attack at the Mall of America. The young man was charged for planning a mass casualty attack after buying an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from an undercover FBI agent.
The suspect reportedly stated that he intended to shoot and kill people at the Hmong Arts Celebration at the Mall of America on October 24.
“Once again, this FBI is moving more effectively than we ever have before at stopping terrorists before they can attack Americans,“ FBI Director Kash Patel stated. “We will continue to use every resource we have to detect and prevent acts of terrorism and wipe out their networks all over the country. Thank you to FBI Minneapolis, who did an outstanding job in the investigation and likely saved lives.“
Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said the charges “demonstrate that the threat of terrorism in support of ISIS and other foreign terrorist organizations is active and continuing.” He reported that FBI officials had attempted to warn the teen’s parents about his radicalization.
Rosen continued, “I just want to say to parents all over Minnesota – for that matter all over America – if you hear from federal law enforcement that your son or daughter is being radicalized to the point where federal law enforcement wants to come and give you that warning, those are warnings that ought to be heeded.”
