The initiative plans to streamline reactor development by July 2026 under federal authorization.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a pilot program to fast-track the testing of advanced nuclear reactor designs outside of national laboratories. Aligned with President Trump’s executive order, the program allows private reactor developers to seek department authorization under the Atomic Energy Act, bypassing traditional testing barriers.
“For too long, the federal government has stymied the development and deployment of advanced civil nuclear reactors in the United States…we are expediting the development of next-generation nuclear technologies and giving American innovators a new path forward to advance their designs,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
The Request for Application (RFA) invites U.S. companies to propose test reactors that could achieve operational status by July 4, 2026, signaling a shift toward quicker, more accessible development of nuclear technologies that serve national interests without being intended for commercial deployment. Initial applications are due July 21, 2025.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for Secretary Wright as he oversees the facilitation of nuclear energy development.
- For Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Goff as he heads the Office of Nuclear Energy.
