The president indicated a shift away from military force while increasing economic pressures.
President Donald Trump’s administration is increasing the economic pressure on Iran. Treasury Secretary Bessent spoke about the economic measures the U.S. would be implementing against the Islamic Republic.
Secretary Bessent said, “It will be a combination of economic isolation like the world has never seen before, and the continued blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that will keep anything from going in or out of the Iranian ports.”
“The economic pressure means that we are going to all of our allies, and this is going to be the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world,“ the treasury secretary continued. “We are going to them and saying you are either with us or against us.”
This decision to increase economic pressure on Iran comes after President Trump recently indicated a shift in U.S. war strategy away from using heavy military force. The president stated that he was in favor of “low-keying it,” and that the naval blockade that the U.S. has set up in the Strait of Hormuz is exacerbating Iran’s economic crisis. The naval blockade alone is estimated to cost Iran $18 billion annually.
President Trump stated of the strategy, “This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale. Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.“
The president added, “I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW.”
Vice President JD Vance has stated that the primary goal of the U.S. is to keep oil and gas cheap for Americans, and that the secondary goal was to “ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.”
