Kuwait Releases Nearly Two Dozen American Detainees in Goodwill Gesture

Envoy Boehler celebrates the progress in obtaining the release of U.S. citizens in foreign prisons.

The State Department announced that Kuwait released an additional 10 American prisoners at the end of April, bringing the total of U.S. citizens freed by that nation to 23. The non-Nato ally nation released the Americans, including veterans and military contractors, in a goodwill gesture as President Donald Trump’s administration has prioritized the release of prisoners and hostages.

“We flew out, we sat down with the Kuwaitis, and they said, ‘Listen, no one’s ever asked before at this level,‘” said Envoy Adam Boehler.

“They’ve been extremely responsive, and their view is the United States is a huge ally. They know it’s a priority for (President Donald Trump) to bring Americans home,” the envoy for hostage negotiations added. “I credit it to the Kuwaiti understanding that we’ve stood up for them historically and they know that these things are important for the president.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio celebrated the release of the prisoners, who maintain their innocence. He also emphasized the relationship that the United States has maintained with the small country, saying that the U.S. “remains steadfast in its support for Kuwait’s sovereignty and the well-being of its people.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
