Judge Edward Davila, Northern California U.S.  District Court

Judge Edward Davila

Northern California U.S.  District Court

Edward John Davila was born in June  1952 in Palo Alto, California. He earned an undergraduate degree from San Diego State university and received his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings School of Law.

He began his legal career as a deputy public defender in the Santa Clara County Public Defenders’ Office where he spent eight years before entering private practice. He was appointed by California’s governor to be a judge on the Superior Court of Santa Clara County. He held that position for ten years.

Davila was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. That nomination expired but he was renominated, confirmed by a 93-0 vote of the Senate, and received his commission in March 2011.

He is married to Mary Greenwood.

In the News…

The Federal Trade Commission tried to use a seldom-applied antitrust argument to block Meta, the parent company of Facebook, from moving ahead with a deal to acquire a virtual reality start-up company.

In a sealed order, Northern California U.S. District Court Judge Edward Davila declined the demand of the FTC to issue a preliminary injunction blocking the sale. At the same time, the judge also issued a restraining order blocking the deal’s closing, thus giving the FTC time to decide whether to appeal.
