The DOJ states that the agreement will “provide critical protections for patients and federal healthcare programs.”
The Justice Department announced that CVS Pharmacy Inc. will pay $315 million to resolve allegations that it illegally filed opioid and other controlled substance prescriptions between October of 2013 and December of 2025 in violation of the Controlled Substances Act.
The allegations also claimed that CVS sought payment from Medicare and other federal healthcare programs for many of those prescriptions, violating the False Claims Act. In addition to paying the monetary penalty, CVS has also entered into an agreement with the DEA to address future obligations related to the dispensing of controlled substances.
“Today’s settlement requires CVS to implement additional safeguards to ensure that prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances are dispensed only when medically appropriate,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “The remedial measures in this agreement — including proactive monitoring of opioid prescribing patterns — will provide critical protections for patients and federal healthcare programs.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Assistant Attorney General Shumate and attorneys at the Justice Department as they hold pharmacies accountable for illegal prescription filling.
- For members of the DEA as they seek to ensure CVS adopts proper prescription-dispensing safeguards.
