Representative Jeffries Launches Bid to Become Next House Speaker

The current minority leader is expected to run unopposed to become the next Speaker, following the midterm election results.

House Minority Leader, Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, announced that he is running to become the next Speaker of the House. This announcement comes after midterm election results flipped the majority party leadership in Congress. Congressman Jeffries is expected to run unopposed.

Congressman Jeffries shared his vision for the next session in a letter to his colleagues, promising to “try to find bipartisan common ground whenever and wherever possible” surrounding affordability issues.

He also stated that “we must restore classic American values like liberty and justice for all, equal protection under the law, the unfettered right to vote in a representative democracy and our heritage as a nation of immigrants. To that end, I look forward to drawing upon the insights and perspectives of every single part of the Caucus in the days and weeks ahead.”

House party leadership elections are expected to be held in mid-December.

Current Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, also of New York, expressed his intention to resume the majority leadership role once again in January. He was previously elected majority leader in 2021.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Representative Jeffries as he prepares to serve as Speaker of the House.
  • For the incoming and returning members of Congress to serve the public with integrity and transparency.
  • For Senator Schumer as he seeks to return to the Majority Leader position in the upper chamber.
