First Lady Melania Trump hosted the 2026 White House Historical Association Presidential Sites Summit this week as part of the commemoration of the U.S.’ 250th anniversary. She spoke from the Rose Garden about the efforts to preserve various features of the White House and Camp David, the presidential retreat.
“The White House stands as an architectural autobiography of America, embodying the enduring values of ambition, democracy, and civic life through its design, craftsmanship, and the objects within,“ Mrs. Trump said. “Generation after generation, America’s ideals and stories are woven directly into the fabric of the White House.“
“Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity,“ the first lady continued. She described discovering century-old wallpaper concealed behind another wall treatment in the private residence, and the process of restoring it.
“Great design transcends aesthetic appeal; it shapes our lived experiences,” Mrs. Trump said. “It fosters collaboration, conveys dignity, inspires ambition, and creates a sense of belonging to something larger.“
She concluded, “As stewards of the places shaped by those before us, we are tasked with making decisions that honor future generations. It is our duty to ensure that the choices we make today are worthy of the legacy we pass forward.“
