USDA Confirms First New World Screwworm Case of Current Outbreak in the Wild

Concerns have been raised about the parasite’s spread across U.S. livestock, and landowners are encouraged to maintain vigilance among wildlife.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed the first case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the wild during the current outbreak. The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) issued guidance for hunters regarding the parasite after the infestation was discovered on an elk at a game ranch in Pecos County, Texas.

APHIS stated, “This detection highlights the critical role hunters, landowners, outdoor enthusiasts, and wildlife professionals play in helping detect and stop the spread of NWS. Early reporting is one of the most important tools we have to protect wildlife, livestock, and pets in the United States.“

The U.S. has been monitoring the outbreak of the parasite in Central America and Mexico, and has prepared for its possible spread.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Division director Alan Cain stated, “We encourage all hunters and landowners to be vigilant for signs of New World screwworm while they are out in the field this season. If you see anything suspicious, report it immediately.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For APHIS Administrator Kelly Moore as she works with state government officials to prevent the spread of the New World Screwworm.
  • For USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins to be discerning as she oversees efforts to address the threat of the parasite to livestock.
  • For farmers and landowners as they seek to protect their livestock and cattle from the outbreak.
