DHS Reports Intercepted Drone Threats During World Cup Events

Over 100 incursions have occurred near FIFA tournament venues.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin reported that federal authorities had intercepted nearly 100 drones around FIFA World Cup tournament venues. He said that 39 had been seized and 55 were “mitigated” by Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Protective Service, and the Coast Guard.

Secretary Mullin said, “Every one of those had the potential not just to be enthusiasts, but every single one of those has the potential to be a terrorist act, too.”

Homeland Security officials reported that, just in the first week of the tournament, 145 incursions occurred at venues in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Locations in Los Angeles, Miami, and New Jersey also reported drone activity as well.

Security efforts for the World Cup have been coordinated by Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, the FBI, and the Federal Protective Service. The Federal Aviation Administration placed airspace restrictions of up to 3,000 feet in altitude and within 3 miles of the stadiums.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Mullin to receive God’s guidance as he heads the Department of Homeland Security and its many agencies.
  • For officials in Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard, the FBI, the Federal Protective Service, and the FAA as they work to protect the public against drone threats.
