Interior Department Reports Early Completion of Tidal Basin Seawall Reconstruction

The project strengthens flood protection around major Washington memorials.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced the early completion of the first phase of the Tidal Basin seawall reconstruction in Washington, D.C., a $112 million project to reduce flooding and stabilize aging infrastructure near national memorials. Funded through the Legacy Restoration Fund established by the Great American Outdoors Act, the project addresses long-standing issues, including sinking ground and frequent tidal flooding near the Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr. memorials.

“The completion of this phase of the seawall project shows what can be accomplished when we invest in America’s treasures,” said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. “It is fitting progress as our nation looks ahead to America’s 250th and the celebration of our shared history.”

The updated seawall includes deeper foundations, wider walkways, and designs created to better withstand future storms and rising water levels. Landscape restoration is ongoing, with hundreds of trees scheduled for planting in 2026. Portions of the area will remain closed through the 2026 National Cherry Blossom Festival to allow the grounds to stabilize before reopening.
