The congressional group intends to advance legislation related to national security and immigration.
U.S. Representatives Keith Self and Chip Roy of Texas announced the formation of the “Sharia Free America Caucus,” a congressional group seeking to prevent the influence of Sharia law in the U.S.
Congressman Self said, “What we need to do is build this caucus now so that we can start educating the American people to the dangers of Sharia in the United States.” He stated that Sharia law conflicts with the U.S. Constitution.
The caucus is exploring legislative proposals, including restrictions on entry to the U.S. for certain foreign nationals and a designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. While Sharia law has no legal authority within the U.S. due to constitutional protections for religious freedom, supporters of the caucus, such as Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, view it as a national security issue.
“From Texas to every state in this constitutional republic, instances of Sharia adherents masquerading as ‘refugees’ — and in many cases, sleeper cells connected to terrorist organizations — are threatening the American way of life,” Congressman Roy stated.
