Secretary of State Responds to G7 Partners on Narcotics Vessel Strikes

Marco Rubio Speaking
He says the U.S. is defending its national security.

At the Group of Seven (G7) ministers meeting in Canada, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded to criticism from a French foreign minister regarding the United States’ strikes on drug trafficking boats out of Latin America. The minister claimed the strikes in the Caribbean violate international law.

“I don’t think that the European Union gets to determine what international law is,” said Secretary Rubio, who is also National Security Advisor. “They certainly don’t get to determine how the United States defends its national security. The United States is under attack from organized criminal narco-terrorists in our hemisphere, and the president is responding in the defense of our country.”

Secretary Rubio continued, “I do find it interesting that all these countries want us to send and supply, for example, nuclear-capable Tomahawk missiles to defend Europe. But when the United States positions aircraft carriers in our hemisphere, where we live, somehow, that’s a problem.”

The U.S. has claimed self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and has informed the U.N. Security Council of its actions.

In a statement, the G7 ministers reaffirmed a shared commitment “to strengthening partnership in securing maritime ports and routes against the trafficking of illegal drugs.” The statement did not address the U.S. strikes specifically.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Rubio in his dual roles as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State.
  • For discernment for President Trump and members of his Cabinet as they seek to prevent the influx of illicit substances into the U.S.
