New screening technology used to identify contaminants.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a new study to screen a wide variety of pollutants in drinking water using cutting-edge technology. The EPA anticipates that this study, along with the implementation of changes required by the Safe Drinking Water Act, will address Americans’ concerns regarding the safety of drinking water.
“We have heard loud and clear that Americans are concerned about potential unknown pollutants lurking in their drinking water. The Trump EPA is committed to getting to the bottom of this, so that Americans can feel confident about the safety of their drinking water,” said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. “EPA’s state-of-the-art study will shed light on this issue and complement the actions we are already taking under the Safe Drinking Water Act.”
Since releasing the draft Sixth Contaminant Candidate List (CCL 6), the agency designated both microplastics and pharmaceuticals as priority contaminant groups. The agency is also pursuing monitoring for drinking water that includes unregulated contaminants, to broaden the spectrum of protection for consumers.
