The Secret Service and FBI are probing whether the veteran was a potential threat to President Trump.
The U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating whether an armed military veteran, who was arrested Sunday after recording agents’ security activities ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to Trump International Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, was a potential assassination threat.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested the former Marine Corps logistics specialist, and found a modified rifle, body armor, and high-capacity magazines at the man’s home. Notebooks with “concerning statements” against the president were also recovered from the residence. The man, who also had an outstanding warrant for robbery, pleaded not guilty to charges to three weapons charges related to his arrest at Trump National.
FBI Assistant Director Patrick Grandy stated, “There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force … will investigate this case thoroughly.”
“While we are still investigating the motives of this individual, we are thankful he was apprehended before the President’s visit,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring.”
In February, the Secret Service fatally shot an individual near Mar-a-Lago who was carrying a shotgun and a gas canister. In April, an armed man was shot as he attempted to charge the ballroom at the Washington Hilton where the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was being held.
