FTC Advises Tech Companies to Comply with Take It Down Act

Online platforms being urged to comply with new federal standards for removing nonconsensual intimate images.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Andrew Ferguson sent letters to social media, messaging, and content-sharing platforms and technology companies, reminding them of their responsibilities under the Take It Down Act, which took effect May 19. The law requires online platforms to establish procedures that allow users to request the removal of intimate images or videos that were shared without consent.

“We stand ready to monitor compliance, investigate violations, and enforce the Take It Down Act,” said Chairman Ferguson. “Protecting the vulnerable—especially children—from this harmful abuse is a top priority.”

The FTC said covered platforms must clearly explain their reporting processes and remove reported material and identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. The agency stated it will monitor compliance and investigate potential violations. The FTC also released guidance outlining expectations for businesses.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chairman Ferguson and members of the FTC as they seek to ensure technology companies comply with regulations regarding online exploitation and privacy concerns.
  • For officials in the U.S. government as they seek to protect children and vulnerable individuals.
  • For protection and comfort for individuals who have been impacted by the nonconsensual sharing of images online.
