Energy Department Offers Conditional Loan for Wisconsin Medical Isotope Facility

The proposed financing would support domestic production used in imaging and cancer treatment.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) issued a conditional commitment for a loan of up to $263 million to SHINE Chrysalis, LLC (SHINE) for a medical isotope production facility in Janesville, Wisconsin. The project would produce molybdenum-99, whose derivative technetium-99m is widely used in diagnostic imaging and other medical procedures.

“SHINE is the key to ending reliance on imports of foreign-produced Mo-99 and ensuring U.S. patients have reliable access to American-made medical isotopes. NNSA’s leadership made this concept a reality, providing funding and technical support from our national laboratories that enabled this innovative U.S. company to go from an idea on paper to a commercial facility that is 75% complete,” said Dr. Matthew Napoli, National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation (DNN).

The department said the facility would use fusion and fission technology and could become the only domestic commercial source of molybdenum-99. Officials also said the project could support construction and operations jobs and strengthen supply chains tied to nuclear medicine.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Wright and U.S. energy officials as they partner with private partners to advance diagnostic imaging and other medical technology.
  • For Deputy Administrator Napoli as he oversees the NNSA’s Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation.
