Grand Jury Indicts Two MLB Pitchers for Bribery, Rigged Pitches

The pro athletes were charged with conspiracies to commit wire fraud, influence sporting contests, and money laundering.

A federal grand jury indicted two Major League Baseball pitchers with the Cleveland Guardians for accepting bribes to throw rigged pitches for bettors’ profit. The two allegedly began to conspire to rig pitches in 2023 using two online betting platforms.

“Integrity, honesty and fair play are part of the DNA of professional sports. When corruption infiltrates the sport, it brings disgrace not only to the participants but damages the public trust in an institution that is vital and dear to all of us,” U.S. Attorney for the Eastern New York Joseph Nocella, Jr., stated.

The maximum sentence for each of the charges is 20 years in prison, should they be convicted.
