Transportation Secretary Announces Funding for New Technology

The SMART grant distributes funding to 24 demonstration projects.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the recipients of the 2024 Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants Program, selecting 34 projects from 321 eligible applicants to receive $50 million.

The projects showcased how new technologies can be used to improve roadway safety in a variety of settings. Some examples include usage-tracking sensors to better predict road maintenance requirements, unmanned aerial systems to identify stranded cars in remote areas, and smart traffic signals for the blind and deaf.

“The Biden-Harris administration is proud to award $50 million to promising technology projects that have the potential to help Americans travel more safely, affordably, and efficiently,” said Secretary Buttigieg. “Today’s funding will help 34 communities across the country advance innovative solutions for better rail crossings, safer road intersections, improved transit accessibility, and more.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the transportation secretary as he oversees infrastructure project funding.
  • For discernment for U.S. transportation officials as they support technology and innovation for the nation’s roads.
