In the News…

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the Chinese coast guard must “desist from its dangerous and destabilizing conduct” in the South China Sea.

He specifically pointed to “reckless maneuvers” against Filipino crews on supply missions to members of the Philippine military, including “forcing of a collision” that damaged the supply vessels and jeopardized the crew’s safety. He was also criticized “obstructing supply lines to its longstanding outpost and interfering with lawful Philippine maritime operations” as undermining regional stability.

China has claimed territorial sovereignty over the region even though an international court ruling said China has no basis in law for its claim.
