Senator Wants Probe into FBI HQ Selection 

FBI director also has concerns about the selection process.

Senator Mark Warren of Virginia has called for an investigation by the Inspector General of the General Services Administration into the selection of Maryland as the location for the new headquarters building of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 

Senator Warren stated that President Biden’s administration gave in to “political pressure” to relocate the headquarters to Maryland. He said, “I think we all expect better from the current administration.” The senator, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said there was “clear political interference” in the FBI Headquarters selection process. 

Christopher Wray, the Director of the FBI, said he has “concerns about fairness and transparency in the process and GSA’s failure to adhere to its own site selection plan.” The director suggested there is a “potential conflict of interest,” in making the site selection away from the Washington, D.C., suburb of Springfield, Virginia, to the Greenbelt and Landover site in Maryland.

Director Wray indicated that information was “inserted into the process in a manner which appeared to disproportionately favor Greenbelt.“ He stated, “Despite our engagement with GSA over the last two months on these issues, our concerns about the process remain unresolved. There are still a lot of open questions.” 

Both Governor Wes Moore and Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland indicated that this is a “done deal” and there is “no going back.”

The GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan said, Any suggestion that there was inappropriate interference is unfounded,“ and that the agency is “looking forward to the FBI state-of-the-art headquarters campus” in Maryland.
