Some House Members Call for Changes to Speaker Removal Process

The group would like to prevent a second ousting of the position.

Forty-five moderates from the House majority wrote a letter calling for changes to the rules in place for voting out a Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Currently, it only takes one representative to pass a motion to call for the removal of the speaker. This was the rule that allowed Congressman Matt Gaetz to call for the vote that removed former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. The signatories of the letter would like to change that rule first and foremost but have not specified how they would like that rule to be altered.

“We cannot allow our majority to be dictated to by the alliance between the chaos caucus and the minority party that will do nothing more than guarantee the failure of our next speaker,” the legislators wrote.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the House as they consider the legislators’ request to change the rule that allows the move to vacate the Speaker position.
  • For representatives in the majority as they deliberate candidates for the speakership.
  • For God’s will to be accomplished in the House of Representatives.
