Senator Cantwell Promotes Quick Rail Safety Legislation

Supports bipartisan legislation drafted by fellow senators.

Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington voiced her desire to move rail safety legislation through her committee by as soon as next month. A bipartisan group of senators led by Senators Sherrod Brown and J.D. Vance of Ohio introduced a bill earlier this month to enhance safety procedures for freight trains carrying hazardous materials.

At a rail safety hearing last week, Senator Cantwell said that she would like the Senate Commerce Committee to debate and approve the legislation for the Senate floor by April. “We can’t have railroads adopt operating models focused on just cutting costs to achieve higher profits and then have higher accident rates,” Senator Cantwell said. “We need to invest in the modernization of equipment that will provide the safety we need.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senators Cantwell, Brown, and Vance as they attempt to increase safety regulations for railroads.
  • For the health of the people in and around East Palestine, Ohio, who have been impacted by the train derailment and exposed to pollution from the burning of hazardous materials.
