Issue 563 – Federal Branches

Praying for Our Leaders in Government

Executive Branch: Pray for the President and his Administration

President Biden’s administration, through the Department of Energy, is taking another step toward advancing the use of the Defense Production Act to promote clean energy. The law gives the president the authority to mobilize certain industries in order to advance national security, and he can prioritize contracts for certain types of products and use financial incentives to expand manufacturing capacity.

Vice President Kamala Harris said relief to Hurricane Ian victims should be delivered “based on equity,” understanding that “not everyone starts out at the same place.” She said, “We have to address this in a way that is about giving resources based on equity…we need to fight for equity,” and that “it is our lowest income communities and our communities of color that are most impacted.” She has declined to discuss her statements further.

Pray for President Biden and Vice President Harris as they conduct themselves in their executive capacities.

Legislative Branch: Pray for Senators and Representatives in Congress

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri has requested an explanation from Attorney General Merrick Garland as to why heavily armed FBI agents raided the home of a  pro-life activist in Pennsylvania last week over a petty criminal charge. And he questioned the Justice Department’s ignoring the violence against churches and birthing centers in recent months.

Representatives Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania and James Comer of Kentucky, as well as more than 100 other House members, asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate foreign investment in U.S. farmland. They questioned whether Chinese acquisitions, in particular, could pose a national security threat.

Pray for members of Congress as they seek answers to important foreign and domestic questions.

PRAY FOR CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEES

The House Education Subcommittee is reviewing research that shows students’ overall math and reading test scores have dropped significantly and that the drop is even more drastic for children in low-income areas. They are looking for solutions to get students back on track.

Members of the House Select January 6 Committee will resume public hearings the second week of October. They do not expect to release their findings prior to the midterm elections.

Pray for members of the various committees to have discernment in their focuses.

Judicial Branch: Pray for Supreme Court Justices and Federal Judges

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was ceremonially sworn in and welcomed to the high court last week with a traditional investiture event attended by President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and their spouses.

The Supreme Court agreed to take up two cases that could challenge technology companies’ legal protections under what is known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

Pray for discernment for all the Supreme Court justices as Justice Jackson begins her tenure on the nation’s highest court.
