Judge Amit Mehta, District of Columbia U.S. District Court

Judge Amit Mehta

District of Columbia U.S. District Court

Amit Priyavadan Mehta was born in 1971 in Patan, Gujarat, India. He grew up in Reisterstown, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Georgetown University and his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. He worked in private practice, then clerked at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Following his clerkship, he returned to private practice. He joined the District of Columbia Public Defender Service as a staff attorney, serving five years, before returning to private practice where he focused on white-collar criminal defense, among other things.

He was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by President Barack Obama and received his commission in December 2014.

In the News…

Judge Amit Mehta issued a 112-page ruling early in February on three January 6 lawsuits involving former President Donald Trump and his aides.

Now in new lawsuits filed by Representatives Eric Swalwell of California and Bennie Thompson of Massachusetts to hold the former president and his allies liable for damages stemming from the January 6 incident at the U.S. Capitol, Judge Mehta dismissed the cases against two defendants—attorney Rudy Giuliani and former first son, Donald Trump, Jr.—while allowing most parts of the cases against the former president to proceed.

Judge Mehta claimed the former president knew that groups such as the Proud Boys “were prepared to partake in violence for him.” He added that the “same is true of other supporters.” The judge also claimed the former president was making a call for “collective action” in his January 6 speech, which led to supporters entering the Capitol that day.
