U.S. Navy Reorganizes Submarine Systems

New Program Executive Office for nuclear ballistic missile subs.

The U.S. Navy has announced a reorganization of its acquisition and maintenance of its nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) systems. A single flag officer will now be over the Program Executive Office (PEO) that manages U.S. nuclear ballistic missile submarines. There will also be a new PEO of Undersea Warfare Systems to oversee the development of underwater communication systems.

Jay Stefany, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition stated that these moves are in the interest of “risk reduction. We have a plan, the plan is as good as can be, but I have some concerns that we want to have a plan B.” Assistant Secretary Stefany explained these moves are to streamline the handling of different classes of submarines, “instead of two organizations, one organization, cradle-to-grave strategic missile submarines.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For officials of the Navy as they streamline the ballistic nuclear submarine systems.
  • For the secretary of the Navy as he oversees his military branch.
  • For the president as commander in chief over the U.S. Armed Forces.
