Jeffrey Steven White was born in September 1945 in New York City. He earned an undergraduate degree from Queens College, City University of New York, and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Buffalo Law School.
He was an attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice over an eight-year period, serving as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland during the middle of this time. He then entered private practice in San Francisco, California.
White was nominated by President George W. Bush to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He was confirmed by the Senate and received his commission in November 2002. He assumed senior status in February 2021.

Even though Apple filed a motion to dismiss, a lawsuit will move forward against the company over allegations that its voice assistant, Siri, violated a plaintiffs’ privacy.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White ruled that the plaintiffs had done enough to allege that their privacy was violated when Siri was accidentally activated and recorded conversations.
However, he ruled that the lawsuit did not prove iPhone users suffered any economic harm from those unintentional recordings, a crucial component of proving that Apple deceptively marketed the voice assistant under California’s Unfair Competition Law.
Judge White had previously dismissed the plaintiffs’ lawsuit saying they had failed to show that their own discussions and communications were being taken by Siri. But plaintiffs revised their complaint.
“In the revised version of the complaint, Plaintiffs seek to remedy these defects by adding factual allegations regarding the use of Siri-enabled devices,” he wrote. “On balance, the Court finds that these allegations plausibly show that plaintiffs’ private communications were intercepted,” he explained.
