CIA Director Meets with Taliban Leadership

U.S. requests extension to depart Middle East nation.

The White House announced on Tuesday that CIA Director William Burns had concluded meetings with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the leader of the Taliban in Kabul. This is the highest level meeting between the U.S. and the de facto government of Afghanistan since the U.S. began its withdrawal of military forces from the region.

The main topic of conversation between the two men was the United States’ request for an extension on an August 31 deadline to remove all American forces from the region. The Taliban has remained steadfast in its refusal to extend the timeline. President Biden has publically stated that he wants to airlift all 6,000 American military personnel out of Kabul as well as all U.S. citizens and at-risk Afghans who want to leave the country.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the administration as they work to evacuate Americans and others.
  • For American diplomats and Taliban leaders to work together for peace.
  • For CIA Director Burns to seek God’s guidance as he heads his agency.
