Members of Congress Introduce Arctic Defense Bill

Call on DOD to create a 5-year plan for the region.

This past week, Senators Dan Sullivan of Alaska and Angus King of Maine, along with Representatives Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and Elaine Luria of Virginia introduced the Arctic Security Initiative Act of 2021. This bill would require the Department of Defense to conduct an audit of the nation’s arctic region, and put together a plan for the ongoing defense of the area. This action comes as the northern shipping passage has consistently been open during the summer, and nations such as Russia and China have been projecting power in the area.

Representative Gallagher stated, “The Arctic is an increasingly vital hinge that connects Europe to the Indo-Pacific. More than ever, the U.S. needs a comprehensive plan to combat increased Russian and Chinese aggression in the region. This begins with ensuring we have the logistics, infrastructure, and force posture we need to defend our interests in the High North.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they debate and vote on this bill.
  • For Representative Gallagher as he works to defend the interests of the nation.
  • For the Department of Defense to maintain strong security in the Arctic.
