Your Heart’s Desires

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.– Psalm 37:4

How exciting it is when you get something you want!—maybe something you have been waiting on for a long time. Whether it’s a material blessing like purchasing a first house, a special person walking into your life, or a reached business goal, it’s fun to get what you want. On the other hand, your heart’s desire may be like the nation of Israel pleading for a king and ending up with Saul, not God’s best.

That’s why it is so important to first delight in the Lord. As you develop a closer relationship with Him your desires change. You begin seeing things the way He sees them and wanting what He wants. When you get in this place, when you are truly delighting in the Lord, you’ll know that you will receive what you ask for and that the answers will be good for you and those around you.

Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). 1 John 5:14 says, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” The Bible also guides us in what we should pray for. 1 Timothy 2:2 says in order to live “a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way,” pray for those in authority. Pray for government leaders to make decisions that will result in peace, quiet, godliness, and dignity.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 37:4

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
