Callista Gingrich

U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See

Callista Louise Gingrich was born in March 1966 in Whitehall, Wisconsin. She graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Later, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Ave Maria School of Law.

After college, she accepted an internship in a congressional office in Washington, D.C., later joining the congressman’s staff. She worked at the House Committee on Agriculture as its chief clerk for 18 years.

After leaving that post, she became president of Gingrich Productions, a multimedia company founded together with her husband, producing historic and public policy documentary films, publishing books and newsletters, and making numerous television and radio appearances. She has authored seven children’s books.

President Donald Trump nominated her to be the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See (the Vatican). She was confirmed by the Senate. She presented her credentials to Pope Francis and officially assumed her duties in December 2017.

She is married to former U.S. Representative Newt Gingrich and is a Roman Catholic.

In the News…

“Defending international religious freedom is a cornerstone of U.S. diplomacy and a key policy priority for President Trump,” wrote U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Callista Gingrich in a recent opinion piece. “From day one, the Trump Administration has taken concrete actions to safeguard this fundamental human right at home and abroad.”

More than 80 percent of the world’s population lives in countries with high or severe restrictions on religious freedom, the ambassador said.

She wrote in advance of a symposium titled Advancing and Defending International Religious Freedom Through Diplomacy, held in Rome last Wednesday.

Ambassador Gingrich wrote, “The United States understands upholding the right to religious freedom is not just a moral necessity, it is a national security imperative. When nations effectively promote and protect religious freedom, they are safer, more prosperous, and secure.
