Administration to Purchase 150M Rapid COVID-19 Tests

The self-contained tests yield 15-minute results.

Under a new agreement between President Trump’s Administration and Abbott Laboratories, the government will acquire almost all of the 15-minute COVID-19 tests the lab plans to produce this year. The U.S. will pay $750 million for 150 million tests, or $5 each. The agreement has not yet been formally announced, but approval to the lab was granted for use of the test earlier this week.

The test, called the Binax NOW, is entirely self-contained and does not require any other equipment to get results, meaning large volumes can be done simultaneously.

Abbott said it will produce 50 million of the new tests a month beginning in October. It expects to have “tens of millions” of tests for September.

“This is a major development that will help our country to remain open, get Americans back to work, and kids back to school,” said Alyssa Farah, the White House communications director. “The Trump Administration is proud to partner with Abbott Labs to make this purchase possible for the American people.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • With gratitude for the near availability of the rapid testing for COVID-19 which will help overburdened laboratories.
  • That groups who most need the testing will be able to receive it first.
  • For the president’s administration as they work to help the nation recover.
