Interior Department Announces Bison Conservation Program

Ten-year plan established to grow bison herds.

The Interior Department has announced that it would be embarking on a new Bison Conservation Initiate with several state and local governing bodies to prevent the decline of native American bison populations. Currently, there are only about 11,000 of the subspecies of plains bison in 19 herds spanning 12 states. At their lowest point, there were only 325 wild bison in the country after being hunted to near-extinction

According to Interior Secretary Bernhardt, “This 10-year plan will guide our collaboration with states, tribes, private conservationists and managers across public lands to advance conservation efforts and honor iconic wild bison.” The initiative will seek to build wild, healthy herds, promote genetic conservation, work to share stewardship across governing bodies, restore ecological areas, and promote cultural restoration of the bison as an icon of the nation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • That God would use the efforts of the Interior Department to bring back healthy bison populations.
  • For Secretary Bernhardt to be led by the Lord on the best way to bring back American bison.
  • That the partnerships between federal, state, and local governments would be blessed with clear communication and synergy.
