House Passes Defense Policy Bill

Legislators rein in Iraq war authorizations but allow presidential use of National Guard.

The House of Representatives approved a $893 billion defense authorization bill this week, sending the legislation to the Senate. This defense authorization bill is an annual funding bill that reestablishes Pentagon funding and spending programs. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers of Alabama commended the bill’s proposed 3.8 percent pay raise for service members and policies that speed up the acquisition of new technologies for the military’s front lines.

“This will fundamentally reform the defense acquisition enterprise,” Congressman Rogers said. “It will continue historic improvements in the quality of life for our service members and their families. And it will build the ready, capable, and lethal fighting force we need to deter China and our other adversaries.”

Representative Jim Himes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, voted against the measure, denouncing the rollback of health care coverage for abortions and transgender health issues, as well as the lack of policies curbing the president’s use of the National Guard.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they take up the legislation appropriating funds for national defense for the coming year.
  • For House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune to seek God’s direction as they head their respective chambers of Congress.
