He says the majority is likely to “unanimously” approve long-term extensions.
President Donald Trump announced that the White House will ask Congress to pass “long-term extensions” on federal control over the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. President Trump first invoked the Home Rule Act to put the D.C. police under the control of the Justice Department on Monday.
The law requires the D.C. mayor to allow the federal government to control the city’s Metropolitan Police for a period of 48 hours. The executive branch can then notify Congress or receive authorization from Congress to extend the temporary control up to 30 days.
With both chambers on recess for the month of August, the administration proceeded with the notification. The act allows Congress to extend this period of control beyond 30 days, and the president expressed confidence that the majority in both chambers will approve this motion through a joint resolution.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For President Trump to be discerning as he seeks an extension of federal control over Washington, D.C. law enforcement.
- For the local and federal agents and officers to collaborate well in the efforts to reduce crime and increase public safety in the nation’s capital.
