First Lady Melania Trump advocated for the law as part of her Be Best initiative.
President Donald Trump signed the “Tools to Address Known Exploitation by Immobilizing Technological Deepfakes on Websites and Networks Act,” known as the TAKE IT DOWN Act, on Monday. First Lady Melania Trump visited Congress in March to advocate for the bipartisan new law, which protects children and families from online extortion and exploitation through the non-consensual distribution of intimate images and deepfake abuse, as part of her Be Best initiative. The first lady also attended the signing of the law in the White House Rose Garden.
“It’s heartbreaking to see some teenagers, especially girls, tackling the overwhelming challenges posed by malicious online content,” First Lady Melania Trump stated during her roundtable on Capitol Hill, “The Take It Down Act represents the first step towards justice, healing, and unity.”
The law, which was sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar, enacts the “criminal prohibition on intentional disclosure of nonconsensual intimate visual depictions and requires covered platforms to remove such depictions, and for other purposes.” The White House called the act “a landmark step in the fight to protect victims of digital exploitation.”
Representative Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida said, “Before this law, victims were ignored. Schools couldn’t act, police had no tools, and Big Tech looked away. With TAKE IT DOWN, that changes. Platforms must respond — and predators will face justice. Now, victims have the power and the law behind them.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the first lady as she advocates for children’s and families’ wellbeing through the Be Best initiative.
- For the president and members of Congress as they work to improve the nation and its laws.
