President Trump also announced the lifting of sanctions against Syria.
President Donald Trump attended an in-person meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, becoming the first American president to meet with the leader of Syria in more than 25 years. This meeting came after President Trump announced in Saudi Arabia that the U.S. will lift the “crippling” sanctions against Syria, originally imposed against the regime of previous President Bashar al-Assad.
President Trump stated, “We are currently exploring normalizing relations with Syria’s new government, as you know, beginning with my meeting with President Ahmed al-Sharaa.”
The White House stated that President Trump told the Syrian president he had “a tremendous opportunity to do something historic in his country.”
During the meeting, President al-Sharaa acknowledged the “significant opportunity presented by the Iranians leaving Syria, as well as shared U.S.-Syrian interests in countering terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons.”
President al-Sharaa did not respond to President Trump’s encouragement to recognize the statehood of Israel, but said he was committed to the 1974 Israel-Syria “Agreement on Disengagement” cease-fire which has been enforced by a U.N. Peacekeeping Force for the past 50 years.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For President Trump as he seeks to expand the Abraham Accords from his first term.
- For wisdom for the president and secretary of state as they engage Middle Eastern leaders.
