An estimated 75 Americans are still missing, and another 14 have been confirmed safe following the disaster in Nepal.
The U.S. Department of State released an update on the number of missing Americans in Nepal following severe flash flooding and mud slides in Nepal. Fourteen Americans have been confirmed safe thus far, but around 75 U.S. citizens are missing. Nepal’s disaster risk authority estimated on Wednesday that 3,916 individuals are missing and the death toll stands at 1,114. According to the Office of the U.N., several areas in the Himalayan Mountains have yet to be reached.
The initial disaster in Nepal occurred in the north-central region of the country, when a slope failure involving a glacier triggered a fast-moving debris flow that traveled 62 miles before encountering a populated area.
The State Department pledged to provide $500,000 to support relief efforts, and officials continue to monitor the situation closely. In addition, the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu plans to continue to work with local authorities to locate and provide aid to U.S. citizens in Nepal.
