U.S. Officials to Meet with Chinese Trade Representatives in Switzerland

Secretary Bessent says the priority will be to deescalate the retaliatory tariffs.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that they will travel to Geneva, Switzerland, to meet with trade representatives from China this weekend. The treasury secretary said that he does not expect a formal trade deal from these negotiations, but hopes that the meetings will cool the trade war between the two nations.

Secretary Bessent said, “My sense is that this will be about de-escalation, not about the big trade deal… but we’ve got to de-escalate before we can move forward.”

The treasury secretary added that President Trump was using “strategic uncertainty” to “get the best trade deals possible,” and, “That’s what’s happening with the trading partners who are coming to us.”

“The world has been coming to the U.S. (for deals), and China has been the missing piece,” Secretary Bessent said. “We don’t want to decouple; what we want is fair trade.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Bessent and Trade Representative Greer to seek God’s guidance as they prepare for the trade discussions with Chinese officials.
  • For President Trump to receive God’s direction as he works to improve the U.S. economy and commerce.
