Unrelated Policies in Defense Authorization Bill

High credit card fees are one example.

Unrelated amendments by members of Congress have been added to the must-pass Defense Authorization Act that sets spending and policy priorities for the next fiscal year for America’s defenses.

The current debate over the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, comes amid broader concerns that the Pentagon itself is too focused on priorities other than deterring and preparing for war.

For example, Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is trying to get an amendment included that addresses high credit card fees, framing it as a way to help military families. Another amendment from Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota would exempt foreign graduates of American universities with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math from annual green card limits. Yet another amendment would stop federal employees from being classified as political appointees without the consent of Congress because individuals can be fired more easily if they are designated as political appointees.

Meanwhile, a vote on the bill is being delayed for the attempts to add these and other unrelated amendments.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for members of Congress as they consider the amendments to the defense authorization.
  • For the senators to have wisdom regarding what should be included in national defense spending.
  • For leaders of both parties in both chambers to be prudent in their focus.
