USAID Granting Millions to China COVID Research

Nine Senators call for halt to funding Chinese-connected group.

Nine members of the U.S. Senate are calling for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to suspend giving federal grants to EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit connected to COVID-19 research in China.

On Wednesday, the senators wrote to USAID Administrator Samantha Power expressing “deep concern” about the millions of dollars her agency is awarding EcoHealth. They requested in the letter that the grant be paused to allow time to investigate such critical matters as EcoHealth’s oversight of foreign research programs and to review any laboratory accidents or adverse events.

“USAID is empowered through federal laws and policies to immediately suspend its awards to EcoHealth,” they wrote. “It is therefore incumbent upon USAID to be responsible stewards of U.S. taxpayer funds, help protect foreign researchers from risk, and immediately suspend all awards to EcoHealth.”

The senators also wrote that Congress has already passed legislation to halt funding to EcoHealth’s “dangerous coronavirus research in China.”

The National Institutes of Health has already suspended bat coronavirus research funding to EcoHealth after finding that the research group was not in compliance with requirements.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they seek to ensure appropriate allocation of U.S. aid.
  • For Administrator Power to heed the concerns of the senators who wrote about the research grant funding.
  • For officials in the National Institutes of Health as they oversee scientific research programs and projects.
