Senate Committee Split on ATF Director Nominee

Question of Senate vote taken up by Senate itself.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-11 to advance President Biden’s nominee for director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Steve Dettelbach. The deadlock sends the question of advancement straight to the Senate, which they’re expected to vote on very soon. If they vote yes to advance the nomination, the Senate will conduct a full confirmation vote this coming week.

“We need a fully functional, fully staffed ATF in order for that agency to fulfill its mission of keeping our communities safe from gun violence,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York said on Thursday. Key Senate centrists have said that they are going to back Mr. Dettelbach’s nomination, making his official confirmation to the position very likely.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president to seek God’s direction as he nominates and appoints individuals to federal positions.
  • For U.S. senators as they consider advancing the current nominee for ATF director.
