Transportation Department Fines Foreign Airlines for Violating FAA Restrictions Using U.S. Codes

A foreign airline that uses the code sharing arrangement must abide by the FAA restrictions.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has fined Société Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines after investigations found that the airlines used U.S. designator codes in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restricted airspace. FAA regulations prohibit U.S. operators from conducting flights in foreign-managed airspace where conflict, militant activity, or heightened tensions pose a safety risk to civil aircraft.

The Transportation Department explained, “Code sharing is a marketing arrangement in which an airline places its designator code on a flight operated by another airline, and sells tickets for that flight.“ Any foreign airline operating flights using U.S. airline designator codes must abide by these restrictions.

“Under the Trump Administration, if you fly carrying a U.S. code, following our safety rules is not optional,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We will not hesitate to hold accountable any airline for failing to comply with agency regulations. Passenger safety comes first—no exceptions.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  •  For Transportation Secretary Duffy as he works to ensure the ongoing safety of air travel in the U.S.
  • For FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford as he leads the FAA and the work they do to ensure the safety of U.S. airspace
